“It behooves us once again to stand face to face with our ideals, to renew our enthusiasm, to reckon again our duties, to take fresh views of our aims, and fresh courage for their pursuit.”
-Woodrow Wilson
As you see in this quote from our 28th President, words from over a hundred years ago still ring true today. With everything going on in our country from mass shootings, the January 6thInsurrection, racial unrest, Roe v. Wade being overturned, and the divide in our Country politically, economically, and socially, we need to stand up for what we believe in with a renewed spirit and take a new look at our goals to unite our Country. We need to find to open a conversation between all sides to find a common ground. That starts this November by electing individuals who are ready to look past partisan politics and self serving agendas and look to work for the people of our Country.
I recently took a trip to DC and I talked to a gentleman who told me that, as beautiful as the architecture and monuments are, DC is an ugly place. My own Father has told me that, as a Veteran, the Government has failed him and he no longer believes any candidates promises. He believes the system is corrupt beyond repair. Unfortunately, these two men are in the majority when it comes to the opinion of our Government. How do we change that? Can we change that?
I believe we can!
There are candidates out there who have the desire and the strength to make a difference. As voters, we need to do our research, get out and meet the candidates, and see who has the true heart to help our Country. I know this is where a lot of readers are going to be skeptical and say that talk and promises mean nothing. You might say it’s all lies just to get elected. And I will admit that a good majority of the time these statements are correct but I believe there are exceptions.
As voters we need to do our research. We need need to look at candidates fundraising. Are they taking money from Special Interest or big time donors ? Are they a grassroots campaign? A grassroots campaign that just takes money from regular hometown supporters are not beholden to anyone but the people.
As a voter we need to get to know the candidate personally. Go to events, attend online Town Halls, try to connect with the candidate via Social Media, and try having a conversation with them if you can. You can weed out a lot of fake people with personal conversation. Get to know the person you are voting for by putting in the time and effort.
As an example, two years ago, I met a candidate online, Allen Ellison of Florida. He is running for US Congress in Florida’s 23rd District. He responded to a comment I made on twitter about COVID. He took time to have a real honest conversation with me. In the coming days and weeks we continued to talk and I eventually volunteered to work on his campaign because I believed in his message and I knew that public service was in his heart. I knew that he wanted to truly help the people of Florida and he had the strength, intelligence, and determination to do so. What also impressed me was that he is running a 100 percent grassroots campaign. He will never be owned or have to answer to big time donors or special interests. Finally, as I got to know him I learned that he is a charitable and generous person. He has been doing good for people all his adult life. He is a true servant of his community. He has touched many lives with his countless good deeds. This really spoke to me. I knew then that this man was the right person to help lead our Country.
Our Country needs us this November. The choices we make that day will shape our Country for years to come. Let’s make sure we are making an informed decision and choosing a person who will help the people of this great land.
