I've translated it on my own. There are many ways to translate things, and some words are hard to find the right equivalent for the occasion (e.g., estrenar). If your Spanish is better than mine, you may find that you wish I'd done some things differently. (I’m very fluent, but not a native speaker.) There is probably a professional English translation of it out there somewhere; I didn’t look for it. I find translating this kind of thing a good way for me to reflect further on the content of it, from the perspective of both languages.
For those who don't know him, Galeano (1940-2015) was a contemporary writer from Uruguay: passionate, political, feminist, anti-imperialist, original. Many of his pieces are what I might call lyrical essays. His Memory of Fire is an astonishing 3-volume undertaking that presents the history of Latin America in short vignettes -- poetic, passionate, insightful and infuriating. All of the vignettes are backed up by historical records. (This piece is not from Memory of Fire.)
If you do read the New Year piece, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
NUEVO AÑO
Eduardo Galeano
I prefer greeting what is starting to what is ending. I prefer hope to melancholy. I prefer plans to failures. I like to think that ahead, there is more life.
We say it every year: December is not an easy month. Hurries, worries, excesses, loyalty conflicts, those who are present, those who are alone, those who are with someone who’s wrong for them, those who should be with someone they don’t want to be with.
And some, more sensible, more frugal, who understand how things are: so as not to force what’s not working; not to impose a happiness that is not felt; not to discount one’s love of those who can’t raise a glass with you on the 31st at 12:00.
Let us think rather of beginnings, of a new page, of new things to try on, of getting rid of what’s no longer working, what takes up useless space.
The world changes quickly, sometimes so much that we can’t follow it. But it is a good time to go through changes together with others. To get together to think, to do, to feel, to give, to love. To rebel against injustice, to be a bit more free, to be more considerate of others, to respect and be inclusive, more supportive, to open our minds and think differently. See how many things we can do together. The world is changing, yes. Don’t wonder if it’s for better or not. It is not happening out there; you are part of it and they will be changes that you will participate in. They will be the loves and the relationships that you may wish to build, the friends that you may choose, the causes you espouse, the times that you decide to take for yourself. Don’t hurry, you are not going to make the most of your time that way; on the contrary, it will go by without you noticing.
So that in these days, when everyone is running to the supermarket and the malls, walk to the park, go slowly, look at the sky, listen to the birds, take notice of others. And welcome the new. It’s your premiere. Always.
Siempre.
