MAGA Republican Congressman Eli Crane officially announced his bid for re-election, and in typical Republican fashion is trying to run as an outsider from the inside. Railing against Washington and the Status Quo, Rep. Crane proclaimed:
For far too long, the status quo in Washington has shamelessly sold out ‘We the People.
Thus said the Congressman who voted for the current House Speaker Mike Johnson and has been subservient to Donald J Trump every step of the way as he navigates his term in Congress. Now, as one of the eight Republicans who voted to vacate Speaker Kevin McCarthy, his claim to shaking up the status quo has some marginal merit to it, but when people think of the dysfunction in Washington and the current mess in the House, Rep, Crane isn’t an outsider, he’s right in the thick of DC’s days of dysfunction, drama, and division.
Sure, he might score some brownie points for ousting McCarthy, but the Mike Johnson House circus is his creation, and while playing to the far right might earn him a congratulatory pat on the head from Donald Trump or Steve Bannon, it does nothing to improve the quality of life for the residents he is supposed to represent in Arizona’s 2nd Congressional District.
Like so many other Republicans, Crane ran last time on Washington doesn’t work for you, then got elected and made sure to prove it. He’ll run against Washington not working again, but just a reminder, he is now one of the reasons Washington doesn’t work for you.
Since Mr. Crane only represents a single digit lean red district, this might be a good time to show him the door and replace him with an Independent who is actually looking to bring people together, improve the material circumstances of fellow Arizonans, and end the politics of drama and division. Eli Crane’s opponent is former Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez, a steady leader who guided the Navajo Nation through the COVID-19 pandemic and who is looking to address important issues like expanding women’s and family healthcare, addressing climate change, and preserving our public lands.
