Sometimes a script just writes itself. Imagine that you are a gay, minority Republican considering running in a democratic majority district in New York. Also, imagine you have a checkered past tied to pyramid schemes. Smart money is you would never be elected to Congress and your campaign spending would never come under scrutiny. So, what if a few thousand dollars or more find themselves going to your own personal use? This is, in fact, the political version of Mel Brooks’ “The Producers.” Moreover, Santos himself claims that he produced Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, one of the most notorious Broadway bombs in theatrical history. The similarities do not end there — given certain Republicans embrace of Nazi rhetoric, is it surprising that the play at the heart of The Producers is entitled Springtime for Hitler: A Gay Romp With Adolf and Eva at Berchtesgaden? The final irony, of course, is the “Gay Romp” given Santos used campaign cash for OnlyFans. Really, Mel Brooks should be compensated for Santos ripping off The Producers.
