Anyone kind enough to read my diaries on Daily Kos has probably figured out that I have an issue with members of a persecuted group who are still PROUD to be Republicans. And in the spirit of equal opportunity derision and scorn, I present the latest pronouncement from the president of the Log Cabin Republicans, Charles Moran, that he is giving anti-gay Speaker of the House Mike Johnson “The benefit of the doubt.” Now, I know that members of the LGBTQ community on Daily Kos already know that the Log Cabin Republicans are full of shit, but Moran has not only closed his eyes and covered his ears with regards to Mike Johnson. Oh no. Moran engaged in false equivalencies and bothsiderism to boot.
Message from Moran: Democrats were a bunch of homophobes in the past! We cannot judge Mike Johnson by his past comments because Democrats were just as bad back then! Pfffft!
Moran dismissed concerns over Johnson's anti-LGBTQ+ worldview.
“I mean, these are all issues, statements, things that are out of line,” Moran said when Business Insider referred to a 2003 statement from Johnson on the criminalization of gay sex and also his comments that homosexuality brought down the Roman Empire. “I don’t think during that time, President Obama or then-Vice President Biden were supportive of LGBT equality. I don’t think that Hillary Clinton was at that time either. It’s not an excuse; it’s not a denial. I just think it’s entertaining that the mainstream media and a lot of Democrats want to sit here and, like, go back to the early 2000s on these things, and they do it with Republicans, but they don’t want to do it with Democrats.”
The Advocate pointed out the obvious with this rancid lie. Obama did not become president until 2009! Nor was Joe Biden VP until then either!
It gets worse. Moran swears that Mike Johnson is not going to push any hot button social issues either. No, really.
Moran said he will give Johnson the “benefit of the doubt.” He explained that he was able to meet with Speaker Johnson’s office. Moran said Johnson's team was committed to building consensus and avoiding the re-litigation of settled law.
"So things that do not have that consensus are things that he's not going to be pushing, which gives me cautious optimism that he's not going to be picking up any kind of hot-button, hardline social issues and trying to push in opposition to LGBT equality issues," he said. “I took that as, you know, things like Obergefell, things like Respect for Marriage, 'don’t ask, don’t tell,' you know, any of the stuff that has been voted on or just settled already. He’s not necessarily looking to deal with that, so that’s very helpful for me.”
The same people that told us they were not really going to overturn Roe are now saying, “Trust us!”
I don’t know Moran. But it wouldn’t surprise me that Moran is just like many black or women Republicans. Both types have put aside any of the insults and oppression they have met with from white male supremacists and misogynists in order to gain access to political power and become well paid in the process. They are the poster boys and girls that “prove” the GOP isn’t really as bad as Democrats paint them to be.
Their real job is to protect white patriarchy. And they will always put their own selfish ambitions above social justice. In fact, the one trait people like Moran share with the likes of Kentucky’s Daniel Cameron, Byron Donalds of Florida, and Susan Collins of Maine is they do not believe in EQUALITY. It is the one defining characteristic of all Republicans.
It’s the old, “I’ve got mine, so fuck you!”
I would remind Moran of the long cruel history of so called christianity in Europe and America. More than a few of the original thirteen colonies had the death penalty for homosexuality. And it wasn’t until AFTER the American revolution that started to change. You could still go to prison for being gay in several states well into the late 20th Century.
I specifically remember back in the 1990’s that NC still have anti-sodomy and oral sex laws on the books. I left NC in 2005, and I’m reasonably sure they were still the law until struck down by the SCOTUS. It shows how “enlightened” America was. It should also be noted that NC is still a Bible Belt State.
But to Moran, I’m betting he thinks his money from tax cuts will protect him from any legal harm. And it’s why he is deserving of contempt. His staying within the Republican Party validates its bigotry.
