Welcome to what is the 1259th original profile here at “Fanatical Republican Extremist of the Day”, where we’ll be profiling Richard Corcoran, a former member of the Florida House of Representatives from District 45 of that body, who rode the Tea Party Wave into office in 2010, running for District 37 instead in 2012, and staying there until he hit term limits in 2018. Back in 2006, he was serving as Marco Rubio’s Chief of Staff (and drawing investigations for how he was spending money), and he’s been in the orbit of many power players in Florida politics and been willing to put a knife in their back, like when he bailed on Rubio to endorse Jeb Bush’s ill-fated 2016 presidential campaign. He at one point served as the Florida Speaker of the House.
While his voting record is the sort of abysmal nightmare you’d expect from a guy who held office through both terms of former Governor Rick Scott, including support for welfare drug testing, any and all anti-choice measures, or trying to legalize discrimination towards LGBTQ people, be it to perform their marriages or to deny them the right to adopt children, perhaps his most controversial actions were taken on immigration.
Feuding with the ACLU wasn’t controversial enough for him to appear like a proper xenophobe, so he also personally funded anti-sanctuary city ads that were a bit white nationalist-y, showing immigrants murdering white women to get everyone properly terrified of the “other”.
While term limits SHOULD have been the end of this bigot’s career, he was appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis after he was out of the state legislature to serve as Florida’s Department of Education, where he spent four years using his position to admit to not really doing his job so much as pretending he was a general in Florida’s culture wars and willfully making children dumber as a part of his political dogma. He resigned from that role in April of 2022 to “spend time with his family”, or “start some new businesses” depending on which interview he gave on any given day, but obviously, you can’t trust him to be a reliable narrator, and more than likely resigning due to pressure to resign for his involvement in a corruption scandal where he was trying to funnel state money towards a former ally in the legislature’s charter school. Four months later, a federal grand jury met to discuss whether or not charges should be pursued in his blatant bid rigging.
Whether or not charges are ever brought, we are hoping this will be the first and only time we have to profile him.
