Every year since 2010 I’ve done a series of December diaries focusing on a variety of seasonal topics ranging from music to food to ugly sweaters. (Full disclosure: I did ONE Seasonal diary in 2008, and 2009 was the first December K2 was with us so I was a little distracted :-)). You can find them all, tagged with #seasonal, and yes I have a spreadsheet so I know what topics I’ve done recently!
It’s time to do it again here in Let’s Go With This Is The New Normal 2023! While my personal December perspective is primarily secular but culturally Christian-based with a healthy mix of Winter Solstice and Unitarian Universalism, these diaries are for everyone who celebrates a holiday in December that makes you happy, that you mark differently than all the other days, or that involves negotiating who brings what food where… or even if there isn’t... this is a place for you and I really hope you’ll bring yourself to the comments!
We started off 2023 with thoughts on decorations, then chatted about Nativities and Menorahs, and wrapped up (see what I did there?) last week with the cost of the 12 Days of Christmas. I’ve only helmed Top Comments on Christmas Day twice before, back in 2015 then again in 2021.
This Christmas didn’t turn out as expected, but we rolled with everything and had the best couple of days possible. K1 and her partner were supposed to come over after Christmas Eve service at church and spend the night, but have spent the past week with covid, the 2020 gift no one wanted then that keeps being regifted like fruitcake. They’ve both on the way to recovery, but it meant Mr. Brillig and I went to church while ‘the kids’ watched via youtube. Our Christmas morning was quiet because 18 year old young men do not get up early :). We managed to open presents before noon, had a delicious dinner for three and then packed up a nice meal for the Isolation Crew, along with their stockings. Presents will wait until we can all be together.
I hope that whether you celebrate today as special or whether it is just another day except almost everything is closed you had a marvelous day. That something made you smile and that you made someone else smile (or if it was a fur friend, that you made them purr, nuzzle, or wag a tail). We’ve got one more week until the New Year, lets make it some good days!
As we hop over to tonight’s Tops, please enjoy the song I listened to on repeat all season. It’s absolutely beautiful!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? It was calm and quiet in the mailboxes today. Hopefully it’ll be busier tomorrow!
