Republicans have no shortage of creativity when it comes to pushing former President Donald Trump’s name out into the general public, as much as we would like to forget the monstrosity of his four years in office. One recent example comes to us out of Tennessee, as reported by local outlet WKRN, where two Republican lawmakers (Sen. Frank Nicely and Rep. Paul Sherrell) introduced a bill that would rename a small portion of Rep. John Lewis Way to President Donald Trump Boulevard.
In a word: Yikes.
The street is located near the Tennessee Capitol Building. Republicans are seeking to rename about two-tenths of a mile. The proposal (HB 1372) was filed on Jan. 31 by Sherrell and introduced in the Senate (SB 1407) on Feb. 1 by Nicely.
If you’re thinking: Are they seriously trying to rename part of a road dedicated to a literal civil rights leader and Freedom Rider during Black History Month to honor Trump? You are, indeed, understanding what Republicans are trying to pull. And you are, indeed, rightfully horrified.

In terms of actual logistics, the Trump Boulevard would begin where Lewis Way intersects with James Robertson Parkway. It would then end at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Basically, conservatives are trying to rename the little part that sits parallel to Capital Hill, per local outlet WSMV.
Lewis Way has only had its name since 2021, when the Metro Nashville Council voted in favor of honoring the late Civil Rights icon and representative, who passed in 2020. Lewis, among other incredible victories, led restaurant counter sit-ins in Nashville that led to huge chances—namely, Nashville being the first Southern city to begin desegregating public spaces.
People on Twitter are (justifiably) horrified at the bill.
I’d say we should be surprised, but when it comes to Republicans, they never cease to amaze by how low they’re willing to go to push their agenda. Truly horrifying.
