According to Reuters, the government of Nicaragua freed over 200 political prisoners who are being flown to the US, a State Department spokesperson said on Thursday (9 Feb). A dual citizen named Michael Healy is included in this unilateral clemency. The Biden administration said “all arrivals will go through the humanitarian parole process”, adding that the Nicaraguan government made “its own decision to release these political prisoners.”

And on the other side of the world on 5 Feb, Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, pardoned "tens of thousands" of prisoners, including some arrested in recent anti-government protests. Excluded are those charged with espionage.

These two humanitarian gestures can give some of us hope in humanity. And I wonder what role Pres Biden and his excellent Cabinet played in all this.
