Not that there’s anything wrong with jelly beans. Just sayin’.
Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum.
This is a post where you can come to share what’s on your mind and stay for the expansion. The diarist is on California time and gets to take a nap when he needs to, or may just wander off and show up again later. So you know, it’s a feature, not a bug.
Grab you supportive indulgence(s) of choice and join us, please. And if you’re brand new to Morning Open Thread, the Hail and Well Met, new Friend.

Sometimes I despair for my country; I guess I’m just getting old and cynical and my eyes are wide open and I’m woke up to here. Twice in my lifetime we’ve endured a president We the People DID NOT elect (not that we ever have, for that matter, but let’s press on). These two presidents were elected by some huge committee, a committee wholly unaccountable to the people. Do you know who is on your state’s electoral college, and if you don’t like any of them can you do anything about it? The answers are (most likely)
NO
and
NO
Our problem is factions. Likely our worst problem is the jelly bean faction, but I’m just opinionating on that. I don’t actually know squat. Anyhow, what’s a faction anyway? James Madison, some guy who had something to do with writing the U.S. Constitution also wrote this:
[A faction is] "a number of citizens, whether amounting to a minority or majority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adverse to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community."
So there’s little doubt in my mind that the jelly bean faction is going to trample the rights of the Earth Day faction and our planet is doomed, but the jelly beans will survive.

I’ve driven right by Jelly Belly several times on my way to the Bay Area, but have never stopped. My loss.
Anyway, Happy Earth Day, for all the beans that’s worth.
April 22 is Earth Day! This annual celebration is an opportunity to raise awareness and advocate for change around the issues most impacting our planet — and celebrate the beauty of Mother Earth.
While the urgency of climate justice should inspire us all to spring to action on Earth Day — so should the exciting progress we’re already making.
So, this Earth Day, we invite you to look for the helpers, make your own meaningful changes for the planet, and tap into joy as a boundless resource for resistance and change.
We’ve gathered some ideas to celebrate and nurture the planet, but first, here are a few quick facts about Earth Day!
- Earth Day was started by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970 to promote environmental policies on a national scale.
- Following the first Earth Day, Congress authorized the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency.
- Earth Day also led to the passage of the Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts.
- In 1990, Earth Day went global and mobilized 141 countries to participate in protecting the environment.
- The date April 22nd was chosen for Earth Day to maximize the number of university (and K-12) students that could participate in celebrating the holiday.
