When they claim that the Democratic Party doesn't care about reducing the deficit and that is why the Democratic Party, my political party, wants a clean debt ceiling bill, then the Democratic Party's response, what the Democratic Party should say, is (1) The recent history of the Republican Party makes clear that they are not actually interested in reducing the deficit and that this is 100% a political game for them since (a) they passed three clean debt ceiling raising bills under Trump and (b) they have not reduced the deficit since before Ronald Reagan (2) President Biden reduced the deficit in the first two years of the first term of his administration and (3) President Biden's budget reduces the deficit as does the Republican Party’s plan, but his plan is responsible and doesn't destroy the social safety net which places the poor and the lower middle class in serious jeopardy and (4) hostage taking — threatening to not raise the debt ceiling if their immoral budget isn't passed is deeply unethical.
Strategically, you blast these points out all the time and everywhere. Emphasizing the point that the new budget President Biden has proposed REDUCES THE DEFICIT makes clear that the difference between the two political parties isn’t what McCarthy is trying to sell to the American people, namely that the Republican Party is the only one that is serious about reducing the deficit and that hostage taking, as opposed to passing a clean debt ceiling raising bill is necessary in order to get the Democratic Party to take reducing the deficit seriously. Rather, the difference between the two major political parties is that the Democratic Party has a history of action on reducing the deficit by you know, reducing the deficit whereas the Republican Party has a history of not reducing the deficit when they are in power and talking about it only when the Democratic Party is in power. The difference is that the Democratic Party's budget reduces the deficit without hostage taking and the Democratic Party’s budget is responsible because it reduces the deficit while preserving the social safety net that the lower middle class and the poor rely upon while the Republican Party's budget engages in unethical hostage taking and is deeply immoral because it tries to use the obligation to pay the bills the previous Congress racked up to force an immoral and cruel budget upon the American people, a budget that shreds the social safety net and puts perhaps 100 million people who depend upon that social safety net to make ends meet and have a future with hope in deep jeopardy.
I am not necessarily opposed to the this one cool neat trick ideas about minting a trillion dollar coin or merely say that it is unconstitutional for the federal government to not pay its debt. However, I am unsure of the public's reaction to these tricks nor do I know the legal repercussions of them. It also lets the Republican Party off the hook This one cool, neat trick might solve a problem with your hair or staying cool when it's hot outside, but I am less sanguine that it's the way to solve this problem which is a bit more serious.
McCarthy tied the debt limit raise to other conditions. The Republicans raised the debt ceil limit three times and increased the deficit by cutting taxes on the wealthy and big corporations. They added twenty five percent of the total national debt during Trump's term. No republican president has reduced the deficit since PRIOR to Reagan.
Republicans have led us into the last three serious economic contractions, recessions: President George H W Bush, President George W Bush, and President Trump. They left presidents who were and are members of the Democratic Party to rescue and salvage the economy after the previous republican presidents laid waste to it. Those presidents who helped rescue the economy are President Bill Clinton, President Obama, and President Biden.
The budget put forward by President Biden who has already reduced the deficit also reduces the deficit. So, President Biden supports reducing the deficit, but by doing it in a responsible way, not by massive cuts to the social safety net that the poor and lower middle class need to survive. However, suddenly once again, now that the president who is a member of the Democratic Party has rescued the economy, the republicans are deficit hawks. They are tying the raising of the debt ceiling to passing an irresponsible, immoral, unethical, and cruel budget that would harm the lower middle class and the poor.
However, this is NOT a scenario where the republicans on one side are for being responsible and reducing the deficit while raising the debt ceiling and the Democratic Party raising the debt ceiling but not being willing to offer a budget that reduces the deficit. Rather, republicans have shown themselves to not actually care about reducing the deficit historically; history makes clear that this is purely and only a political ploy. Both political parties offer budgets that reduce the deficit, but Biden's plan does so responsibly and doesn't tie raising the debt ceiling to it unlike the republicans.
