Erdogan hails election victory but Turkey left divided
Recep Tayyip Erdogan's supporters celebrated well into the night after Turkey's long-time president secured another five years in power.
"The entire nation of 85 million won," he told cheering crowds outside his enormous palace on the edge of Ankara.
But his call for unity sounded hollow as he ridiculed his opponent, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, and took aim at a jailed Kurdish leader.
The opposition leader did not explicitly concede victory.
Complaining of "the most unfair election in recent years", Mr Kilicdaroglu said the president's political party had mobilised all the means of the state against him.
Ultimately he was no match for the well-drilled Erdogan campaign, even if he took the president to Turkey's first run-off vote.
He barely dented his rival's first-round lead, falling more than two million votes behind.
President Erdogan ended with just over 52% of the vote based on near-complete unofficial results.

State Farm has stopped accepting homeowner insurance applications in California
State Farm has stopped accepting homeowner insurance applications in California, citing the growing risk from catastrophes like wildfires and the rising cost to rebuild.
"State Farm General Insurance Company made this decision due to historic increases in construction costs outpacing inflation, rapidly growing catastrophe exposure, and a challenging reinsurance market," the insurance giant said in a statement on Friday.
"It's necessary to take these actions now to improve the company's financial strength," the company added.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, State Farm was the leading company offering home insurance in California.
The decision to forgo coverage went into effect on Saturday. It applies to both personal and business properties.

Alberta’s party leaders are ignoring the climate crisis while the region burns
Record-breaking wildfires have charred more than a million hectares of land in Alberta, pushing tens of thousands from their homes and choking the skies in a thick haze of smoke.
But on the zigzagging campaign trail of the province’s general election, neither party leader has confronted the realities of climate change and how it will likely dramatically reshape life in the Canadian prairies.
Instead, they’ve spent weeks sparring over taxation, health care – and one candidate’s deeply offensive remarks about transgender children.
By all accounts, Alberta’s election on Monday is going to be a political nail-biter, a bitterly contested campaign filled with fears of party mutiny, allegations of judicial interference and an unprecedented political comeback.

Russia unleashes largest drone attack on Ukrainian capital, crowds mark Kyiv Day
KYIV, May 28 (Reuters) - Russia unleashed waves of air strikes on Kyiv overnight in what officials said was the largest drone attack of the city but crowds poured into the streets later on Sunday to celebrate the anniversary of the Ukrainian capital's founding.
Ukrainian military said it had downed 58 of the 59 launched drones, described by the air force as a record assault with the Iranian-made "kamikaze" drones. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said all 36 drones targeting Kyiv had been destroyed.
The pre-dawn attacks came on the last Sunday of May when the capital celebrates Kyiv Day, the anniversary of its official founding 1,541 years ago.
"This is how Russia celebrates the day of our ancient Kyiv," Zelenskiy said in his nightly address.

Asian shares, US futures rise on debt ceiling deal
SYDNEY, May 29 (Reuters) - Asian shares and U.S. stock futures rose on Monday, thanks to a weekend deal by U.S. President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to suspend the government's debt ceiling, ending a protracted stalemate and providing some relief for investors.
After weeks of negotiations, congressional Republican McCarthy and Biden forged an agreement late on Saturday to avert an economically destabilising default to suspend the $31.4 trillion debt ceiling until 2025. The deal will now have to passes through the narrowly divided Congress.

Feinstein, Back in the Senate, Relies Heavily on Staff to Function
When Senator Dianne Feinstein entered a hearing room this month to reclaim her seat on the Senate Judiciary Committee after a monthslong absence, she was accompanied by a phalanx of aides.
Two staff members settled the 89-year-old California Democrat into a chair at the dais as the assembled senators greeted their ailing colleague with a round of applause. When Ms. Feinstein spoke — during a vote on one of several of President Biden’s judicial nominees whose approval had awaited her return — she appeared to read from a piece of paper handed to her by a female aide seated behind her.
“I ask to be recorded as voting in person on the three nominees considered earlier, Mr. Chairman, and I vote aye now,” she said.
The aide knelt next to her and whispered into her ear in between votes — popping up repeatedly from her seat to confer with the senator, at one point clearing away the paper Ms. Feinstein had read from and presenting her with a folder that appeared to contain background information about the nominees.
Apologies for the short OND; the restaurant took much longer than expected.
