This from NALIP: National Association of Latino Independent Producers (via email):
Rep. Joaquin Castro wants your nominations for Latino films to add to National Film Registry! Congressman Castro and members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus are collecting suggestions for films from Latino, Black, and other underrepresented communities to nominate for the National Film Registry. As of 2023, out of the 850 films in the registry, only 24 are Latino films.
"We're 20 percent of the country, but only three percent of the films in the National Film Registry have anything to do with Latino lives and culture," Castro states.
Nominate films at: castro.house.gov/films by Thursday, August 3rd. Films must be at least ten years old.
What great films have we all seen by Latinx producers & directors? Remember that these are American films, not including ones from Cuba, Mexico, etc. — which would be another massive list.
You can find a list of Mexican-American films here
Puerto Rican films here — shockingly, I’ve never heard of most of them! Remember that all Puerto Ricans are American citizens.
Wikipedia has no such list of Cuban-American films, though I’m sure there are many.
I’m sure there are many others; feel free to do your own research.
Here are a few of my favorites, most of which I’ve used in the (high school) classroom:
El Norte
Mi familia/My family
La misma luna/Under the same moon
Salt of the Earth, a McCarthy era blacklisted classic — remember the original “cancel culture”?
