Here is our nice list of 100 hit songs from 1997:
en.wikipedia.org/…
That list has many of the songs that were on the list for 1996.
I might post all of them, pointing out that I recall them from last week. If they stayed on the charts, they must have been pretty good, worth another listen this week.
Madonna, at number 87:
So nice and mellow, with thoughtful philosophy. I like philosophy.
Los Del Rio, at number 82:
That was number 1, in 1996. Well worth another listen.
Eric Clapton, at number 67:
That was number 19, in 1996. So mellow, so nice.
Coolio, at number 66:
I am not so much a fan of gangster stories, but I like the way he used classical music, as the foundation for that gangster song:
Seems like a nice combination. Coolio, trying to give advice to certain people, useful philosophy, with a classical foundation. I like philosophy, and I like the classics.
Sheryl Crow, at number 60:
I like this song. Goofy and fun:

He's got a daughter he calls Easter.
She was born on a Tuesday night.
If you stop and think about it, every parent should remember the time of day, and the day of the week, of the births of all their children. I remember the approximate time of day, and the day of the week, of the death of any close family member who has died. My wife Tonia died on a Thursday, at about 9 PM, for example. (Thursday, the 10th of March, 2022.)
Barbra Streisand and Bryan Adams, at number 53:

and the romantic drama The Way We Were (1973). Streisand won a second Academy Award for writing the love theme from A Star Is Born (1976),
Because I only heard songs from her in the sixties and seventies, I was surprised she had a song on the charts in 1997. But she was only 55 at that point, so, not too amazing. She is 81 now, by the way. And still active:

She is not touring anymore, but she is writing her memoir, to be released in November of this year.
And she is involved in charity fund raising:
I had a wonderful call with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine. I have been moved by the resilience and courage of the Ukrainian people and his inspirational leadership.
It is my great pleasure to join President Zelenskyy and his United24 initiative to help raise funds for urgent medical needs in Ukraine.
Blackstreet, at number 23:
That song was number 42 in 1996. I like it.
Third Eye Blind, at number 17:

I want somethin' else
To get me through this
Semi-charmed kinda life
Baby, baby
I want somethin' else
I'm not listenin' when you say

Drugs are mentioned elsewhere in the lyrics. But my “somethin’ else” is coffee and tea! Ha!
Toni Braxton, at number 4:
That song was number 81 in 1996. I see why it moved up. So powerful, so well done. Mmm.
Elton John, at number 1:

I saw so many artists that sounded famous, but their songs did not jump out at me. So, there is a good chance that some of you will post a song or two here, that will make me say, “Thank you!”
Hugs!
