Criminal defendants do not have the right to use running for public office as a shield to avoid prosecution for their crimes. Laughable how Republicans think Trump getting arrested will win over Black people to his side. Trump may be a rapist, but he doesn’t remotely have the same circumstances.
@glennkirschner2 nails Trump’s legal team to the wall — calling out the offensive ridiculousness of trying to equate Trump’s case with the Powell v. Alabama case, also known as the Scottsboro Boys case where 9 Black teenagers were tried on charges of raping 2 white women just days after their indictments, without time to retain their chosen attorneys.
During the hearing on Monday, Judge Chutkan sought to calm Mr. Trump’s lawyer, Mr. Lauro, cautioning him twice to turn down the “temperature” when he was speaking.
At one point, she appeared upset by the way that Mr. Lauro in his filings about the trial schedule had cited Powell v. Alabama, a landmark 1932 Supreme Court decision that reversed the convictions of the Scottsboro Boys, nine young Black men who were falsely accused of raping a white woman.
Judge Chutkan pointed out that Mr. Trump would face trial in seven months after he was indicted, compared with only one week in the Alabama case.
The two cases, she added, were “profoundly different” at their core.

My position has been that Trump will not be brought to trial before the RNC, at which point he'll be named as their nominee and trying him becomes nearly impossible before the election.BUT, Chutkan is doing the thing I thought no judge would: treating Trump as a normal citizen.
I still don't know if March 4 holds. The first trial date rarely holds. But even if 3/4 gets bumped to 5/4, that's still plenty of time to try and convict before the RNC in July. And Chutkan just doesn't seem inclined to grant the massive delays the defense is asking for.
I could move the goalposts and say that he won't be *jailed* until after the election ('cause he won't, because of appeals). But I didn't even think he'd be brought to trial and, boy howdy Chutkan is trying to make me owe some dinners all across this country.
I still could be right, but she's making me look wrong. Gloriously wrong. I'll be the happiest wrong guy from the internet wearing a giant DUNCE cap on live television that you've ever seen next March. :)
Justice delaying is over in Georgia: Fulton County's Fani Willis publicly requests that trial of Trump and others start October 23, 2023
Former Georgia Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan on Donald Trump: “He’s got a moral compass more like an axe murderer than a president. We need to do something right here, right now. This is either our pivot point or our last gasp as Republicans.”
