From Global News (Canada):
Amid a wave of legislation in some U.S. states targeting the LGBTQ2 community, Canada has updated its travel advisory for the country specifically advising people to check state and local laws before visiting.
The Canadian government's United States travel advice page includes advice for Canadian travelers. Some of the advice is what one would expect: avoid hurricane areas, watch out for crime (especially gun violence), and be sure to have travel health insurance, because “Health care is excellent [but] treatment costs are expensive.”
With regard to “2SLGBTQI+ travellers” [sic], Canada notes:
Some states have enacted laws and policies that may affect 2SLGBTQI+ persons. Check relevant state and local laws.
Global News explains that the use of “2SLGBTQI+” is an “expanded term that includes reference to two-spirit, intersex and other sexualities.”
In context, the use of “states” here refers to “states of the USA,” rather than to nations generally.
In regard to nations generally, Canada advises its 2SLGBTQI+ travellers:
Not all countries have the same values and legal system that we have in Canada. As a result, it is important for you to be informed about the legal framework and social customs governing sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics in your destination country.
On its “Travel advice and advisories by destination” page, Canada still gives the USA a green checkmark (its best rating), indicating “Take normal security precautions.” What is new, according to Global, is that Canada has updated its travel advisory for the USA “specifically advising people to check state and local laws before visiting” and that this update is in response to “some U.S. states targeting the LGBTQ2 community.”
Potential hazards from such targeting may include difficulties in receiving services such as health care, as well as other restrictions. Global also helpfully notes that “[t]he Federal Bureau of Investigation earlier this year noted a 35 per cent jump in hate crimes in its most recent 2021 data, led by a rise in attacks that targeted sexual orientation.”
