We’re hearing a lot about how important Gen Z GOTV is. But how to make it happen?
Civic Engagement Beyond Voting (CEBV), an AZ grassroots nonpartisan organization, has a blueprint. Their focus right now is youth outreach and they’re pioneering a state-wide program for registering high school students. Here’s how one of the organizers describes the project:
The plan was to enlist high school students to run voter registration drives in their schools. Another civic group, The Civics Center (TCC) would train and equip students with registration supplies. They set a goal of 20 schools from all over AZ for the first drive during Voter Registration Week (Oct 2-6, 2023).
They then asked their followers to be creative, get the message out and enlist students wherever they could. To their delight, students from 29 schools agreed to organize drives and the students are now in the process of figuring out the ins and outs of registering students. TCC is guiding them through obtaining school approvals, getting press coverage and preparing for their drives.
If this pilot project is successful, they plan voter registration drives for Spring 2024 (Cap, Gown and Ballot), and Fall 2024. Their goal is to create a culture of voter registration in schools around AZ. The organizer thinks it just may work!
How remarkable is this? Do you think you could do something like this where you live?
