As reported in the Fresno Bee, the state has requested that a judge order the oil companies “to pay into a fund that California would use to finance future climate mitigation and adaptation efforts to protect against pollution and climate change-fueled events.”
In a press release, the Attorney General said: “With our lawsuit, California becomes the largest geographic area and the largest economy to take these giant oil companies to court." The press release also quotes Governor Gavin Newsom:
