I am noticing a trend here. Some people are assigning (some) blame to the offender for the sexual assault. However, they then criticize the victim of the sexual assault for choosing circumstances that they imply logically led to the assault. When they do this, they are criticizing or blaming the victim of the sexual assault for the sexual assault.
Here is my response/reply to one such post :
When you criticize the woman for putting herself in that situation, no matter how you phrase it, you are assigning blame to the victim of sexual assault. That's what you have done in your post. You simply have blamed both the "pero" and the victim. Saying that the "perp" should be blamed for the sexual assault isn't necessarily contradicting the statement that the victim shares blame for the sexual assault. That's different from saying that the person who engaged in sexual assault is the only one to blame for the sexual assault and that the victim doesn't share ANY PART OF THE BLAME for the sexual assault. The end. Period. Full stop. Don't bring up the woman's "choices" in a succeeding paragraph.
When you criticize a woman for her "choices" in a dialogue about her being sexually assaulted, then you are blaming the victim of sexual assault.
You can make a good and clear comment that rightly only blames and criticizes the offender and then proceed to contradict that by criticizing and blaming the victim of sexual assault. Essentially, that's what you've done here except your statement that assigned some culpability didn't assign all culpability exclusively to the offender; rather, you left open the possibility that the victim of the sexual assault could be responsible for choices that, in your view led to the sexual assault. The victim doesn't share ANY PART OF THE BLAME for the sexual assault.
