There’s an ironic bit about the Republicans wanting to pass unpopular abortion bans. They present themselves as the party of individual freedom. They’ve made that their brand ever since they stole the icon of the Marlboro Man. They dis Democrats and our communitarian ideals. Importantly, they say people aren’t owed anything by society, but should succeed or fail based on their own ability and effort.
But look what they’re saying about abortion. Abortion is responsible for a shortage of infants, they say. More young people are needed to work all those jobs that employers are having trouble filling. (They’re a little bit quieter about it, but they make the same argument for filling the ranks of the military.) In other words, they believe that women should ignore their individual wants and needs and have children for the sake of the community.
Similarly, abortion (they claim) will help all those dateless men find a partner, whether they want to make themselves decent company or not For some reason, according to conservatives, society owes it to them. SMDH.
Not only are women to bear and raise children for the benefit of society, they are to do this even when the majority of adults are against these forced-birth policies. We (they say) don’t know what’s best for us, so they have to decide for us, and force us to comply. Republicans are the real builders of a Nanny State.
