As most Daily Kos readers know, disgraced ex-President Donald Trump has 91 indictments. As far as I know, none of those 91 indictments include one of his most widely-reported criminal acts: child abduction.
The Trump administration took thousands of immigrant children away from their parents, shipped the parents out of the country and locked up the children in overcrowded detention centers. The immigration records were intentionally discarded so as to make it difficult for the parents and children to ever be reunited.
The conditions of those detention centers were so harsh as to be below the basic standards of federal penitentiaries. While this was happening, many Trump supporters praised this “policy”, saying that the children had it coming because they entered the United States illegally.
Yes, I’m aware that crossing the United States border without authorization is against the law. But do you know what’s also against the law? Child abduction! I’m no legal scholar, but I’m fairly certain that child abduction is a much more serious crime than entering the country without documentation. If a regular citizen decided to kidnap a few children and lock them up in a cage, that citizen would serve a very long prison term. Why should it be different if a President does it?
A court has ruled that a President does not have what Trump called “Presidential immunity”; a right to disregard all laws and do whatever he wants. Therefore, even if child abduction was one of Trump’s official “policies” as President, he should still be charged with a crime, along with anyone in his cabinet who assisted him in the crime.
