As a decades-long Kansas City Chiefs fan, I can say with certainty that Taylor Swift is the greatest musical performer in the history of mankind. And I can say that despite never having heard one of her songs – of which I can name maybe one – all the way through.
Then again, I’m sure she’s never read my blog, so fair’s fair, Taylor.
In truth, I say that because I don’t know what else you can say to the Right-wing exploding heads who’ve taken to attacking her with a barrage of conspiracy theories, idiotic stories, and self-owning contempt.
Swift is in an ultra-high-profile relationship with the Chiefs’ Travis Kelce, who is one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history -- now that I really can say with certainty. The Chiefs are heading to their fourth Super Bowl in five years, and Republicans have decided to spend a lot of their energy attacking the couple and claiming something’s fishy that Swift and Kelce will again be in the national spotlight shinning on the biggest game of the year.
This of course leads the mainstream media to jump in and write a bunch of stories about the Right’s outrage, taking time away from reporting on real issues. It’s a vicious circle.
What’s this babbling all about? Sure, it’s easy to mock and laugh at it. That’s what you do to clowns. You laugh at them.
Still, we need to see this for what it is: another attempt by Republicans to divide us on social and cultural issues in the hope of getting people who don’t benefit from their policies to vote for them. Swift is just their latest effort.
In other words, their venom is more calculated than sincere.
If Donald Trump makes his way onto the general election ballot this year, the odds are he’ll lose the popular vote, just like he did in 2016 and 2020. His only hope would be winning enough key swing states to win in the Electoral College.
To that end, the GOP – devoid of any real legislative accomplishments and showing itself every day to be a dysfunctional party with no interest in governing and in complete subservience to the twice-impeached, four-time indicted ex-president – turns to its some of its favorite ploys: conspiracy theories, attacking so-called “elites,” and misogamy,
They want to gin up their MAGA base to hate someone like Swift – Kelce not so much, after all he is a man, he plays football, and to my knowledge he’s never chosen to kneel during the national anthem. They want their voters and anyone else who’ll listen to see Swift as another Democratic tool to take away their guns, their “liberty,” their “freedom,” their way of life, and whatever else they can throw at the wall to see if it sticks.
Trump’s rabid base would drink turpentine if they thought it was something that real patriots/real Americans/real men did, so it’s no surprise that some of the loudest voices on the Right are demonizing a woman – a woman, mind you – for no good reason.
Republicans are also deathly afraid of Swift’s popularity and her legion of fans and followers. What if she endorses Biden? The party of voter suppression will lapse into uncontrolled hysteria at the thought. Better to start discrediting her now.
True, endorsements from famous people don’t always mean victory, but since Swift urged her fans on Instagram in September to register and vote, 35,000 people responded.
The truth is I don’t care much about Swift or Kelce, beyond hoping that the latter continues to help my team win. That doesn’t mean I dislike them. They seem nice enough. It’s just that they have no real effect on my life, so while I wish them well there’s really no reason for me to dwell on either of them.
That’s especially true since another goal of the Right’s Swiftmania is to own the libs. To say ridiculous, incendiary things to try to get a response.
This kind of stupidity really deserves only one answer.
Actually, as a Chiefs fan, I’m ecstatic to hear that the deep state has fixed the Super Bowl so the Chiefs will win. Now I can relax and not worry about the outcome.
Thanks Obama.
