Right-Wing Politics
We have our quasi-fascist party (AfD) with almost 20% support - mostly in the former E. Germany where sympathy for Russia persists (the good old days when we did not have to take care of ourselves because all decisions were made by the government, and even the most lazy had a life no worse than average). It was recently uncovered that a few AfD leaders had talks with some REAL NAZIS about deporting persons who are not sufficiently German, even naturalized citizens. This scandal caused a tsunami of anti-AfD demonstrations with 100K-size crowds in the big cities. Could we hope for huge anti-MAGA demonstrations in the USA?
News Reporting
In the USA, news is a business and the first priority it to make money. Some make money with lies and hate to keep the mentally unfit tuned-in for maximum exposure to ads. Others, not quite so evil, just focus on sensationalism and sob stories to keep the audience interested. English language news in Germany is mainly from BBC and CNN. I prefer BBC - they seem to strike a good balance. CNN reporting is OK, but the 50% time for ads and self-promotions makes me flip the channel after 15 minutes or so. The German news providers are generally responsible, IMO, although they also spend time on sensationalism and sob stories. They are publicly funded. They must worry about budgets, but not about profits. The late night TV talk shows are excellent: top politicians duke it out with reporters and subject experts from universities and think tanks.
Reasonable government policies are often so poorly communicated that they become easy targets for distortion by opposition politicians. Additionally, typical folks are not paying attention and don't know the difference. "Flood the zone with shit" is very effective politics in the USA. This is also an AfD method in Germany, but the problem is minor, IMO. News reports are objective and keep a lid on the BS.
Refugees
Germany has big problems with refugees and esp. Ukrainians. The national government tells local governments to take care of them, without providing enough money for this. Towns lose their sports halls and hotels. Rents for small apartments become too high for poor and even average families. Refugees cause government budget problems. Increasing taxes is ruled out, even (or especially) for the very rich who fund the politicians. One rarely hears about a moral obligation to help, or that Ukrainians are effectively dying so that Germans can get away with minor contributions of money and arms (€10 billion annually or 0.23% of GDP). All politics is local, even stuff like global warming and Russian military attacks.
