While reading a story here
[this one]
about the pathetic spin the NYT is attempting with the SOTU,
it occurred to me that the Grey Lady is long gone. She has clearly either retired or died. And upper management preferred to replace her with a shameless PR flack.
Meanwhile, closing in from behind on the outer rail, we have the Stepford Senator from Alabama, Katie Britt, who has managed to parlay [ahem] the Republican Career Killing Rebuttal Speech into a one-woman cottage industry. From her kitchen! Quite an achievement there. [I’ve embedded a YouTube clip of Jordan Klepper and Jen Psaki discussing said achievement in the comments.]
Meanwhile, as we contemplate the best way to set up humanitarian airlifts for Paul Krugman and Charles Blow [you may suggest others as well] — and a possible intervention for Senator Britt, who is now apparently doing the Trump’s Flying Monkey Two-Step and doubling down on her lies — here is a theme song for the NYT and the Republican party as they exist today.
This one, of course, is set to Cole Porter’s classic, magnificently performed by Gabriela Koch* and her Jazz Quartet. Lyrics below, video follows.
Lies For Sale
Lies for sale
Horserace lies that never seem to pale
Lies that tell you Joe’s unfit,
Lies that tell you Trump Is It;
Lies for sale.
Who will buy?
Who endorses what they should deny?
Billionaires with fleets of jets,
Predators with no regrets;
Lies for sale.
Let the J-schools talk of truth
And integrity
Our front man is too uncouth,
Devoid of honesty.
Telling truth may make a splash,
Telling lies brings in the cash;
Old lies, new lies
“We-all-know-it’s-true!” lies
Lies for sale
Appetizing juicy lies for sale
Who cares if our nation dies?
Profits are at record highs!
LIES for sale.
*These fine musicians are in Germany; I hope she’s not related to the infamous brothers, but remember Mary Trump, and the sad fact that we don’t get to pick our relatives.
