I certainly can’t compete with Jimmy Kimmel’s “Isn’t it past your jail time?” line from the Oscars on Sunday night, a line which which was pretty great. But I can offer a couple of recommendations from a couple of the “off the beaten path” categories — the Documentary shorts and Live Action shorts.
In the documentary short category, check out The ABCs of Book Banning, which places the focus on kids and various banned, restricted and challenged books. With a starring cameo from a wonderful elderly woman giving a testimony and a public meeting in Florida about such book banning.
Having said that, I will say that movie which won in this category — The Last Repair Shop — deserved to win. Definitely a better film, with some great stories within the bigger story. If you like music, definitely see this film. It’s excellent.
Given my political passions, I was most looking fwd to the book banning film. But, while good, I thought it could have been much better. I think it would have benefitted, for example, by including / interviewing some of the Moms for Liberty proponents and by including some relevant facts (such as the fact that many of these book bans are proposed by a handful of people, some of whom don't even. live in the affected districts or have kids in the impacted schools). Still, I think it’s an incredibly important issue and is worth seeing.
As for the Live Action short category, I highly recommend Red, White and Blue, a short story about abortion and and reproductive health care access. I thought it was quite powerful — and deserved to win.
I’m not even sure if these will be available ion a streaming service, but they are worth seeing, indeed.
