The New Democratic Party of Canada put forward a motion in the House of Commons this evening to officially recognize Palestinian statehood. After extensive debate and a total of 14 amendments by the governing Liberal Party, the non-binding motion called for the government to work toward "the establishment of the State of Palestine as part of a negotiated two-state solution." Clauses entailing recognition and alluding to genocide — points that the NDP emphasized, were removed by amendments.
The amended motion also calls for ceasing the further transfer of arms exports to Israel. The motion was passed.
While this is a weaker motion than the NDP proposed, I’m pretty sure it’s the first time Canada has called for a two-state solution, at least within the context of the current war. The transfer of arms provision is also important.
