Dear GOP representatives, school boards, and members of Moms for Liberty—Moms for Bigotry, shall we say, since liberty is the last thing on your agenda:
I have a question about gay and, even more so, the tiny number of trans kids—young people with different or uncertain feelings about sex and gender identity.
You don't like them, I get that, but I really want to know: How exactly do they affect you? What impact do they have on your life, your faith, your marriage, your trips to the supermarket?
Why do you want these kids to be unhappy, confused, or all too often commit suicide? Why do you hate and fear them so?
I don’t imagine you're struck dumb by my eloquence. I anticipate many of you will answer: it's not that they affect you so much, it's that you don't want your children exposed to such abominations. Okay, I have a follow-up:
Is it your job as a parent, is it even possible, to protect your kids their whole lives from ever encountering anyone who thinks or acts differently than you?
Have you done such a bad job of instilling your values you're scared they'll be shattered by the mere existence of people with different ones?
I’m just asking.
