Conservative Party legislators in the Canadian Parliament recently blocked a New Democratic Party (NDP) motion to "officially recognize the State of Palestine," a step that no member of the Group of Seven (G-7) nations has ever taken.
Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who needs the support of the progressive NDP reached compromise language calling on the international community “to work toward a two-state solution.” Moreover, while PM Trudeau supports “Israel’s right to defend itself,” he has been critical over Israel’s military campaign in the Gaza Strip. Last week, Ottawa announced they had paused non-lethal military exports to Israel in Jan 2024. Canada has also been matching international humanitarian donations to the people in Gaza.
Canada, which has approximately one-ninth the population of the US, plans to reduce its temporary residents and limit immigration. Ottawa is attempting to address a severe housing crunch and over-stretched essential services caused by a sharp rise in international students, foreign workers, and other temporary residents. The Trudeau government relied on immigration to drive economic growth and fill labor shortages, but apparently the infrastructure was unable to keep up with the influx. On any given night 35,000 Canadians experience homelessness; at least 235,000 people are homeless in any given year.
Lastly, a secret report by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) pessimistically warns that because of catastrophic climate change, declining living standards, and foreign encroachment in the Arctic, the situation for Canada’s population will vastly deteriorate over the next five years, which could lead to civil unrest. The study was released through a Canadian FOIA request. To read the redacted analysis linked at bottom, you must have a Scribd account.
