I still remember the sigh of relief after Biden was elected in November 2020, and the other sigh of relief in the middle of the night on January 7, 2021. It is finally over.
Not even close.
We missed the metastatic tumor that grew back with a vengeance.
In cancer treatment, if it’s a resectable tumor, based on the pathology (whether the margins are clear), molecular diagnostics and risk factors of the patient, oncologists will often recommend post-operative adjuvant chemotherapy and radiation, just to eradicate the remaining tumor and decrease the risk of recurrence.
Once it was clear the GOP was not willing to let Trump go by either voting for impeachment and Kevin McCarthy going to Mar-a-Lago to kiss his ring, DOJ should have expeditiously started investigating and bringing him to trial for J6. Instead it went after the small fry while Trump took over the GOP.
Cancers lose tumor suppressor genes and become more and more refractory to treatment if they’re not eradicated. The real world analogy is the ever widening Overton window by Trump.
It’s not too late, but the repeat surgery will need to be even more traumatic than the original. And I’m sure we will make the same mistake even after Trump is defeated (with luck) in 2024—it’s not just him, but Trumpism which is the problem.
