This is the time of year when you can spot the hardcore Chrstians.
We go to church on Good Friday.
Not everyone does, even those who are regular churchgoers.
For one thing, the service is on a weekday. For another, the services are, frequently, held in the afternoon. Not everyone gets the day off. Those who do may be busy getting ready for the holiday.
Then, Good Friday is about the crucifixion. There is no way you can make a service like that upbeat.
Easter is great. The church is full of flowers. There’s special music, maybe a procession. Everyone’s in their best clothes. The hymns are joyful. Even people who don’t usually go to church go on Easter.
Good Friday hymns are gloomy. The message is gloomy. The services are gloomy. In my church, they turn off the lights during the service, which makes it hard to read the hymnal.
Of course, we know Easter is day after tomorrow, and we’ll be belting out “Welcome Happy Morning”. But, right now, we’re being reminded of Christ’s sacrifice for our sins, and that is anything but joyful.
So, it’s the hardcore, the truly devout, who attend Good Friday services.
Which leads me to wonder, did Donald Trump, who claims that the Bible is his favorite book, attend a Good Friday service?
Or was he too busy selling Bibles?
It would be easy to find out.
I’m guessing that he, and much of his family, will be conspicuous at an Easter service somewhere. He needs the Evangelicals, if he wants to be elected again. He’ll probably be promoting his special Bibles when he does. (Can you say sacrilege? I know you can.)
But I’m betting he skipped the Good Friday service this year, and every other year of his life.
He claims to be a Christian. He claims to be a lot of things, most of which he isn’t.
His faith, like everything else in his life, is a fraud.
