Forget Left v Right, Democrat v Republican, Conservative v Liberal, Evangelical v All Other Religions. It is the wealthy v the people and has been since mankind left the hunter-gatherer tribes and started farming. But it was after the early farmers started selling their excess produce did the sins of avarice and hubris take over and Mammon smiled. It was about 5,000 BCE when farmers got with local leaders to get protection for their property and produce.
City-states and then empires formed, and the sins gave those the right to force other humans to labor building wealth for the state and for the wealthy. Through empires, kingdoms, dynasties, etc. for about 7,000 years the sin of avarice would never be sated, and the sin of hubris would not be lessened. Through the European feudal systems and New World colonies the wealthy ruled all with iron fists.
A light of hope was lit when those colonies were induced to separate themselves from their wealthy, foreign overlords. The people were lured to fight to the death, if need be, with words such as “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." What enslaved people would not fight for those words for themselves and future generations?
The Revolution won, a constitution written, and individual rights and privileges enshrined with that great document. What could go wrong? The people's freedoms were sabotaged by the same people who kept them enslaved throughout the colonial era and the European feudal systems before that.
