Just a quick update, I’ll write more fully about this later, but I thought y’all might want to know that Favour’s baby finally had his Naming Ceremony today and is now officially a member of the community.
Favour is a young Nigerian woman who is living in Accra, Ghana. She came to my friend John, who is known for helping people in need, after she had been fired from her job because she was pregnant and her boyfriend had abandoned her. John helped arrange for the baby to be born in hospital and we have been doing what we can to help both mother and child since then.
A Naming Ceremony is extremely important and should be performed within weeks after birth but we simply did not have the funds to do it. We have barely been able to keep the baby fed (Favour cannot nurse) and more than once he has been forced to go hungry.
But we were determined to get it done this month, one way or another, and finally today was the day. The baby is now Donald Buoteg Amuoah, a person in his own right and no longer just Favour’s baby.
As it turned out it cost far more than we had budgeted for and I’m not sure how we’ll keep everyone fed for the rest of the month but sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. This is just something that had to be done so that the baby can have his full place in the community.
I’ll keep this brief but I did want to add this. In so many pictures the baby has seemed asleep or unconscious and I have never seen a photo of him smiling, so this picture of John and the baby together today warmed my heart.
