Now that Donald Trump is facing 34 felony counts in Manhattan for falsifying his business records in an effort to save his 2016 campaign, he is almost certain to be found guilty of some if not all of those charges. Here is a quick rundown of what could happen next.
While it would be nice for the trial to conclude before November and for the judge to sentence Trump to prison before he even has the chance to steal the 2024 election, I would say that this is quite unlikely. Even if this were to occur, it is much more likely that he will either (1) be given a suspended prison sentence which will start after the election and the new presidential term; (2) have a chance to appeal his conviction; or (3) both of these. You know it, and I know it; if he is given the opportunity to appeal, he will. He will engage in the same old tactic of appeal, appeal, appeal...delay, delay, delay...drag it out for as long as possible. It is what he does.
So, let’s say that this is exactly what happens, and that Trump does have a chance to campaign and run for president. By all means, let him run; it is his election to lose by a wide margin thanks to the fact that women are going to be turning out in droves this cycle to vote for their reproductive rights. His rant about turning our country into a dictatorship does not help matters out, either.
(As an aside, when taking into account the number of votes Hillary Clinton received in 2016 along with the votes Joe Biden received in 2020, Trump is certain to lose the popular vote anywhere from 12 to 15 million if this pattern continues. When it comes to the Electoral College, my current best-case scenario has Biden winning 440 electoral votes to Trump’s 98, and my worst-case scenario has Biden still winning but by a squeaker, 274 to 264. This means Biden could take the Electoral College by an average of 357 electoral votes. This seems like wishful thinking, but it could very well happen.)
After Trump loses the election, one of four things is bound to happen.
A: Merrick Garland, Congress (maybe except for Marjorie “Traitor” Greene), and SCOTUS are all going to cave in and say it is all over for Trump. Congress will vote him guilty of inciting an insurrection and/or Garland will finally prosecute him for it at the federal level. They will not allow any more of Trump’s delay tactics. SCOTUS will not hear any of Trump’s appeals.
B: Judge Aileen Cannon will cave in and say it is all over for Trump, and will finally decide it is time to get on with the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case and get it done. She will not allow any more of Trump’s delay tactics. Trump will be found guilty of most (if not all) of the charges against him.
C: The state of Georgia will cave in and say it is all over for Trump, and will prosecute him at the state level for election interference. They will not allow any more of Trump’s delay tactics. Trump will be found guilty of most (if not all) of the charges against him.
D: Two or perhaps all three of the above.
This is all just my opinion. However, I can probably safely say in advance that whatever happens, it is all over for the Orange Guy.
