Blogs off the Beaten Path

Fri Dec 03, 2004 at 06:21:08 PM PDT

First off, let me say thanks once again to everyone for the warm welcome you've shown the new gang of guest posters - and thanks to Markos for tapping us. It's an honor, and I'm excited to get started here.

I'd like to begin by proposing a new recurring feature around these parts. Unless someone comes up with a better name, for now I'll call it "Blogs off the Beaten Path." Most if not all of us here are very familiar with the titans of the blogosphere: Atrios, Josh Marshall, Kevin Drum, and so on. The big players get plenty of attention - and deservedly so, because they all put out great products and have created, each in their own way, excellent sites.

But there are many, many lesser-known blogs which are, as the Koufax Awards might put it, deserving of wider recognition. I always love finding interesting new blogs that I hadn't previously discovered, and I usually am able to do so because one of the bigger blogs links to a story on a smaller site.

In fact, two years ago, a post on TAPPED - then as now a blog heavyweight - pointed me in the direction of DailyKos, something I've always been grateful for. And as the (mostly former) proprietor of a smaller blog myself, I was very grateful for the mention Kos gave me when I was starting out.

In any event, all of us here probably know a few hidden gems - we have some blogs in our bookmarks that don't get a lot of attention, but probably should. So every couple of weeks or so, I'd like to showcase one or two blogs that are, as I say, somewhat off the beaten path. And I'd like to solicit your suggestions for which blogs I ought to check out. Since this is a political site, I'm primarily interested in other blogs which also have a political bent, but I take a pretty broad view of what the means.

So, tell me - where should I start looking? And in the finest tradition of Meteor Blades, take the poll.
