The Supreme Court ain't FEMA

David "Axis of Evil" Frum wrote this about Miers.
She rose to her present position by her absolute devotion to George Bush. I mentioned last week that she told me that the president was the most brilliant man she had ever met. To flatter on such a scale a person must either be an unscrupulous dissembler, which Miers most certainly is not, or a natural follower. And natural followers do not belong on the Supreme Court of the United States.
Then he deleted it. Pressure from his overlords in the White House? Instapundit has links to conservative bloggers outraged by the decision.
The emerging theme -- that the Supreme Court isn't the place to dump political allies. I think that's something those of us on the left and the right can agree to agree on.
(The wingnuts are also furious that Mier contributed money to Al Gore and the DNC back in the late 80s. That may mean she's just like 8 billion other formerly Democratic southerners. But if Bush's base wants to get all riled up about it, that's good too.)
Update: That Mier is 60 years old is also bizarre. The White House strategy on judges has been to fill slots with 40-50 year-old judges, the better to preserve their conservative legacy long after their corruption leads to electoral defeat.
Mier's nomination was predicated by fear. Bush is afraid. That's why the right-wingers are pissed. Their fearless leader couldn't muster up the courage for a real fight against Senate Democrats.
