I was completely shocked this morning, when I stumbled upon CNN Headline News spouting absolutely anti-American falsehoods about the 'institution of marriage'...
Usually, CNN HN is a simple mouthpiece for the 'thugs and the Bush administration party line (I suppose they figure they have ~45 seconds for each story, so there's potentially little opportunity for covering multiple viewpoints). But when I was clicking through the channels this morning, I stumbled upon a longer piece on the topic of "Marriage in America".
In my opinion, they did an excellent job of presenting a straightforward history of the discrimination embedded in our country's marriage laws, starting back in the early 1800's. Then the narrator made the critical connection between the current gay marriage debate and the widespread discrimination against interracial couples before the 1967 supreme court decision that invalidated the laws against such unions. Everything was wrapped up with a very direct indictment of the bigot's main argument today [paraphrased]: "Contrary to common belief, marriage in America is a strong, valued institution because of how it has changed and adapted to the times."
I was shocked, spellbound, and absolutely giddy. Seriously, if CNN HN runs stories like this, then maybe we're turning a corner here, and the mass media will make the obvious connection that this piece did. That would probably turn a good 10% of the populace that is against gay marriage to a more ambivalent stance, making any hate amendments 'dead in committee' as it were.
