This is one of my pet projects, and I am very glad the Democrats are going to use it against the Republicans. Although they claim fiscal responsibility, the Republicans spend money like drunken sailors.
WASHINGTON - House Democratic leaders said Tuesday they will try to hold Republicans more accountable for annual federal deficits in the hundreds of billions of dollars, starting with a vote on raising the $7.4 trillion debt ceiling.
Spratt said that with the proposed $650 billion increase in the borrowing cap,
the Bush administration will have raised the debt ceiling by $2.1 trillion. Republicans blame the weak economy and the war against terrorism for the increased budgetary shortfalls.
Pelosi led a meeting of Democratic House members to plot strategy in the wake of the election that saw them lose four seats, to 201. Republicans hold 231 with one Democratic-leaning independent and two Louisiana seats still undecided.
She also met with Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record), D-Nev., the Senate Democrats' leader-designate following the election loss of Sen. Tom Daschle of South Dakota, and with defeated Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) of Massachusetts.
"The table is set for us to go forward and hold the Republican administration accountable," Pelosi said earlier at her news conference
Pelosi could become a real force right now. I think would be great for the Dems to have a woman leading the Congressional fight on this.
I also think this is a great first first. Although the Dems will probably move, it will remind fiscally conservative moderates that Bush is killing us with debt.
