Much has been made lately of the undeniable cowardice and hypocrisy of the Talibaptist Party and its supporters lately (certain state treasurer Marines from Colorado notwithstanding). Their general refusal to so much as consider showing any patriotic support for the military they claim to love by directing their kids (or themselves) towards the military is, frankly, damning. Literally so, by some interpretations of the punishment for hypocrisy.
Much has also been made lately of unacceptable military recruiting practices. I was against the Iraq war on the grounds that containment was working quite well and that international law, including treaties entered into by the US and having legal standing mandated by the Constitution, declared Bush's plans flatly illegal. However, now that we're in, we need to make sure the military can do its job.
Here's the problem: I and, I suspect, quite a lot of progressive individuals would be personally unwilling to join the military due to the rampant illegalities taking place, the untrustworthiness of My Pet War Preznit, and/or other moral and ethical objections to becoming a potential combatant (and don't let anyone fool you; any desk clerk could be called up to the front and would have no choice but to obey orders). So how can we support the troops and the military without violating our own ethics on the matter?
Why, go help the people who are so vocal about supporting the war to do their patriotic duty and enlist! Call up your local recruiters and suggest that they station themselves outside the church doors on Sunday morning. If they say no, or don't do it - why, lend them a helping hand yourself! Go pick up a stack of enlistment papers (or just one and make photocopies) and be on hand Sunday morning to invite the freshly-indoctrinated faithful to show their faith in God by letting him protect them from Iraqi bullets and bombs (because of course the Republican leadership can't be relied upon to provide mere mortal armor).
Use common sense, of course. Many denominations are sensibly against invasions and occupations, and their memberships are unlikely to be fertile recruiting ground. On the other hand, if the church parking lot is covered in ICTHOS-emblems and gun racks, you've hit the mother lode! You're well on your way to doing your part to help our beleagured military recruiters reach their targets and ease the burden on our imperial-overstretched troops, and all while helping unthinking sinners abide by their own loudly-proclaimed moral code.
