FOR Elouise says:
Hi, Ted. I'm delighted you chose the conservative attempt to overtake all facets of society to address this week. Not only is it a blatant and insidious effort to control the last liberal bastion of the American culture, it is dishonestly disguised as an innocent project to vent one of their pet complaints.
Beyond the prima facie case that professors (as well as journalists, as opposed to their corporate masters) tend as left as the military tends right, I am bemused by conservatives championing causes which should hardly be anyone's primary concern. War in Iraq going badly? Change that to the war on Christmas. Lousy economy? Rather than find ways to reverse that (and God forbid a discussion of the effect of tax cuts), point to the "liberal" media covering it. Need I go on? Rather than confront myriad nasty "developments" since the Bush regime began its march toward one-party rule, they simply label public broadcasting the dreaded L word, and when that doesn't culminate in a hostile takeover, drop that in favor of laboring mightily to "expose" liberally-biased professors who, as they would tell you, were merely trying to tell the truth as they see it.
The problem is, as patently obvious as it is to you, me, and your supportive readers, this "Trojan Horse" study may rabble-rouse the anti-intellectual crowd on a regular diet of FOX news and similarly-skewed media outlets. Numbed minds are a rather receptive audience to simplistic concepts. The question is can it succeed in altering college dynamics if administrators responsible for hiring the staff and shaping curricula prove as easily cowed as has become the so-called mainstream media?
Thus, having taken a self-explanatory truism - the inherent nature of a thought-provoking environment - to the level of ultimate conquer, conservatives may succeed in converting a diversionary complaint into an all-out war over what is taught in college, and by whom. The implications are mind-boggling. Thank you for monitoring this issue in its nascent stage.
