Viewers of MSNBC's
Hardball were treated to a rare episode last night. The program was devoted to reviewing the deeply flawed assumptions and promises from the WH concerning every aspect of the Iraq War, President Bush's
abysmal poll numbers, and the looming loss of GOP seats in the coming mid-terms as a result. But forty minutes in, host Chris Matthews suddenly made an abortive detour into fantasy-land, trying to portray the insurmountable problems the Republican cluster-fuck in Iraq poses for the
Democrats. How ever will the Democrats survive this relentless plague of record popularity?
[Link] The latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll finds the Democratic Party leading the Republican Party 55% to 39% among registered voters in the generic Congressional ballot ... This is the largest lead Democrats have held over Republicans in the 2006 campaign thus far.
In point of fact, some Democrats are as confused and paralyzed as the very Republicans who got us into this nightmare. This group appears content to go with the GOP "we're gonna get more Americans killed and wounded and spend a trillion dollars in the process without changing a damn thing" solution. Sadly, some of the dems still wallowing in that Republican cesspool continue to fish for votes in the GOP muck, making them almost as deluded as our Commander-in-Chief.
Then there are democrats that do have alternative ideas, and some of these folks are credible military experts. Jack Murtha for one, Gen. Wesley Clark is another. And several democrats have pointed out recently that our greatest leverage over the various players in the Iraqi government, is to end the open check policy and tell them point blank we're going to leave soon, if the Iraqis can't get their shit together. These ideas have their pluses and minuses. But the point is they're ideas.
Democratic solutions to any of the mounting Republican created disasters don't have a snowballs chance in hell of being seriously considered, much less implemented, as long as the GOP is in power. In the meantime, here's a nice point to launch the next time Matthews goes into GOP brown-nose mode: The Republicans are Out of Ideas. And while Tweety sputters, follow-up with The Republicans are Losing the War. How's that for playing Hardball?
