Maybe we are looking at this gay marriage the wrong way...
If I were to belong to a church that wanted to sanction same-sex marriages, wouldn't government intrusion violate the free-exercise clause of the constitution?
While most liberals, I think, see this as an establishment issue, that is, the federal government attempting to justify policies based on perceived Christian values, wouldn't it make a strong case to try to force the issue by advancing a liberal church's choice to engage in same-sex unions?
I realize that the establishment clause of the first amendment has been guarded much more carefully by the courts than the free exercise clause, but this angle of attack may frighten others into rejecting Bush's new drive for a constitutional amendment. As a result, a united front of right, er, correct thinking Americans could blunt the attack on our rights.
There must be a Christian church out there that is ready and willing to take up the challenge.
