The viable Democratic Candidate comes from background of persuasion, confrontation, conflict and
winning. He is a trial lawyer who won his largest, and most uncollectable judgment ($21 Million), against a
crooked attorney! He is, and has been, the Champion of the little guy for many years.
[NOTE: NOv 8th is NOT the election Date. See below]
He is used to being in places where he has to speak well and with conviction. He is used to persuading people to his point of view.
His name is Steve Young. He has made the pilgrimige to Washington to talk to the Big Boys. He is doing fundraising pledge rounds and talking to local OC Democratic clubs. He is doing all the things a viable Candidate should do.
Remember, after OH-2 This is the Second Half of the Game. With The Republicans on the Ropes after their essential LOSS in Ohio,
and watch for the fraud to be found, and the two districts being almost identical in registration...
here's part you're going to love:the Blogsphere in the 48th Cal CD has a new Partner; A Partner that can do the other half of the work the electronic half can't.
Steve Young is a member of SoCal Grassroots! Born of the combination of the Kerry/Clark/Dean/Kucinich 2004 Campaigns, SoCal Grassroots has 17,000 people in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA on it's mailing list. It can turn out an enormous workforce.
This will be the first time a Campaign has consciously made an effort to unite
- A Campaign
- A Formal Local Grassroots org that is BIG
- The Blogsphere
SoCal Grassroots can provide the tremendous amount of shoe leather and sweat to win the Special Election in the 48th. The Blogsphere brings the fuel: the cash...the mojo. SoCal Grassroots and volunteers from all over will bring the well-trained presence to make the effect on the ground undeniable. What factor makes it winnable? See below.
Steve Young will make a good Candidate. He will be working from the day the election is announced. I'll be posting here and at The Political Dogfight for the duration of the race. I am only a few miles outside the District and will be involved in the campaign in some way or another.
The Bush Administration has tried to sneak the Cox confirmation past the newsrooms this last Friday. Cox WAS confirmed last Friday. This is pure manipulation.
And this sets up a confusing time for Democrats in and around the 48th District. There is a very specific set of guidelines that Gov Muscles must follow to set the new Special Election Date. It will NOT be Nov. 8th, the statewide General Special Election...it will be AFTER that date.
Check in at The Political Dogfight for the exact details in about a half hour.
The trigger comes when the office is declared 'vacant'. Did that happen when Cox was confirmed, in which case I think the election would be scheduled for November 22, 2005 or when Cox formally resigns?
Cox has NOT resigned. If it takes his resignation to trigger the ability of the Governor to set the dates then the election date will be in Decemeber most likely. I will call the Secretary of State's office again tomorrow and ask an Elections Analyst. Again.
What is the impact of the Election date? Think about it. We have a Statewide Special Election, only a few have every been held and are notorious for low turnout, and just two or three weeks later we have ANOTHER election in the 48th?
My personal guess is that this will be a record low turn out. But what could change that? The RNCC is embarassed by OH-2. They know the circumstances are almost identical in Ca-48. They may dump a ton of money in the District. I think the DNCC will be JUST as determined after losing, if we did, by only 4,000 votes. That doesn't count Steve Young's fundraising or The Blogsphere's!
With that much money in the District it could drive participation higher than expected.
It will be interesting. And we've got a real shot!
If you have questions; Ask away. If I have an answer I'll give it. If not I'll say so and go find someone to ask.
