Fellow Kossacks, we need your help. The local (SF Bay Area) news segment I was interviewed for earlier today regarding DowningStreetMemo.com aired tonight with a glaring misrepresentation that needs to be corrected.
Update [2005-5-21 2:51:15 by ukiyo]:
OK, just talked to someone live at the station and they said the script reads, "the British government HASN'T argued the memo's authenticity..." so it appears Ms. Kim simply misread it. The text of the piece available online right now does not include the anchor's comments, so I can't verify this, though the young lady on the phone sounded sincere enough. Take it as you will.
Remainder of original post below the fold...
The story was fine up until anchor Lisa Kim's final word at the end in which she stated, "the British government has argued with the authenticity of the memo..." This is patently untrue. A variety of sources, such as
CNN, have made it clear that the UK government did not deny the authenticity of the memo.
I have left a message with the producer who interviewed me asking her for her help in obtaining a correction, but more needs to be done. If you live in the Bay Area, or even if you don't, go to NBC11's web form to make your concerns known.
This is especially troubling because one of the angles the story played on was the lack of coverage in the US media. Lack of coverage is bad, and misinformation is worse. Let's hold the media accountable just as we would have them hold the administration accountable.
