WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Congress was set on Thursday to finally approve a $375 billion catchall federal spending bill that has been delayed nearly four months by bitter disputes over issues ranging from media ownership to gun records and food labels.
The Senate was expected to pass the 1,200-page bill after Democrats, under pressure to free up its funding for everything from foreign aid, farm, veterans, education, transportation and health programs to the State Department and FBI, abandoned procedural tactics they had been using to oppose it.
"Nobody here wants to be accused of shutting the government down," admitted Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota. "But it is with great concern and chagrin that we find ourselves in this position today."
The cloture vote passed with 61 votes. I do not yet know the names of the Democratic Senators who participated in this, but when I find out I will post them in another diary. We need to remember the names of these people. As far as I am concerned these Democrats are still not as bad as the Republicans. They are much much worse.
What does this cloture vote mean? It means that the Democrats in the Senate were not willing to use every means at their disposal to protect overtime pay for millions of American workers. It means that there is no longer a party that represents working families. Tom Daschle said "nobody here wants to be accused of shutting the government down." If the government will not even protect a right as basic as overtime pay, I say shut the damn thing down. They might as well shut the Democratic Party down while they are at it. If they are not even willing to fight for overtime pay, this party does not even need to exist.
Someone needs to explain to me why I should even bother to vote in November. What is the point of sending Democrats to Washington if they will just sell us out.
