If you oppose
abortion & think it's morally wrong, wouldn't it make sense to try to stop unwanted pregnancies before they happen? To those of us who are sane it does, but not to the right-wing.
The Republican controlled Wisconsin legislature is trying to pass a Ban On The Morning-After Pill at all state college campuses, probably the places that need access the most...
The Wisconsin Assembly approved a ban on the so-called morning-after pill on state college campuses, a restriction that would be the first in the nation if approved.
The vote in the lower chamber late Thursday sends the bill to the state Senate; both are controlled by Republicans. Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle said he will veto the measure if it reaches his desk.
The legislation would prohibit University of Wisconsin System health centers from advertising, prescribing or dispensing emergency contraception -- drugs that can block a pregnancy in the days after sex. The state university system has 161,000 students on 26 campuses...
...I've always thought that the
Morning-After Pill (also called emergency contraception) would be a great
wedge issue for our side, because it shows how completely whacked out the Republicans are on the abortion issue. It's a perfect middle ground for people who are not entirely comfortable with abortion. The party should move to allow wide access & education on emergency contraception, because it would cut into the amount of abortions performed & teen pregnancies.
Look at the guests on the Jerry Springer & Maury shows, who are there because they don't know who fathered their child, or are getting cheated on. It's more often than not, young women who've had an unwanted pregnancy. If you wanted to see a source for disfunction in society, there it is.
Added to this is the fact that the Morning-After Pill is NOT an abortion pill. It is a heavy dose of the hormones in traditional birth control pills taken after sex has occurred, usually within 72 hours, that prevents contraception from happening. There is no life to be destroyed, unless the right-wing is calling sperm & eggs cells life now too.
What this points to is the battle over abortion is not totally about babies. It's about them not wanting people to have sex without consequences...
Republican Rep. Daniel LeMahieu introduced the bill after a health clinic serving UW-Madison students published ads in campus newspapers inviting students to call for prescriptions for the drug to use on spring break.
"Are we going to change the lifestyle of every UW student? No," LeMahieu said. "But we can tell the university that you are not going to condone it, you are not going to participate in it, and you are not going to use our tax dollars to do it."
Democrats said the bill would deny rape victims a chance to stop pregnancies and predicted it would lead to more unwanted pregnancies and surgical abortions...
...So if you get raped at the University Of Wisconsin campus, don't call health services. One other thing, the Wisconsin bill is so vaguely worded that it might affect regular birth control..
LeMahieu said the bill would not affect traditional birth control pills. Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager said the bill was worded too vaguely to know for sure.
