Great day at the polls; staunch republican gets pissed, votes democratic for first time in life. Single issue abortion voter wife goes out with the girls, doesn't vote. Yep, it was a head spinning day at the polls. In my very right leaning precinct, which by the way seemed to be manned entirely by democrats (if they only knew) there were numerous comments from voters like "let's throw the bums out", "let's hope this one doesn't end up in jail", etc.
Contrast this with the supercharged missionary atmosphere at the 2004 election. George was their man and nobody better get in the way! Tails between their legs vs. righteous morality. A sight to behold.
My neighbor and friend Scott F., a staunch born again conservative now has my undying admiration. We've had several political discussions over the 6 years we've been neighbors and while they've always been cordial (he never crossed the line into O'Reillyville) our relationship has been strained under the Rule of W. I've often asked my husband how can someone be a Christian and support what is happening under this administration? But yesterday he shocked me with his whisper after I handed him his ballot; "I'm so pissed, I'm voting for a democrat for the first time in my life!" To which I whispered back "welcome back to the human race!"
But seriously, folks.......Busby garnered 45% of the total votes in this overwhelmingly republican precinct. Not bad. Imagine what could be done with a little get out the vote work? Let's keep our eye on the ball, put the impeachment talk on the back burner till after the November elections, and keep on talking about the culture of corruption. I think many republicans are getting disgusted with their own guys. There's a light at the end of the tunnel and I'm shining my dancing shoes!
P.S. We could really use help counting the votes; many volunteers are burnt out and we got a peek at the new DIEBOLD machines expected to be used in November. If yesterday's experience was any indication, unless they're fixed by then it looks to be a disaster. We need all the eyes and ears we can get. It's not a totally thankless job...you get to meet and chat with neighbors, be part of a collaborative effort, sleep well knowing that at least your own precinct had an honest vote and get some cash for a dinner out. In San Diego county please call 858-565-5800 to volunteer. Thanks!
