Site performance advisory

Tue Nov 07, 2006 at 08:01:12 AM PDT

We all know what happens to blogs on election days. They get hacked by the Lieberman campaign die.

We've gone to great lengths to stay on the air today.

First things first -- the archives will be turned off today. They are a resource drain we cannot afford to have. So you won't be able to view or search for any diary or story older than 10-14 days.

Second, the hotlist box will be turned off.

We've got some serious juice powering the site. But if it starts slowing, we'll proceed by:

1. Turning off the blogads
2. Turning off recommended diaries box
3, Turning off the recent diaries box

And if it's still slow at that point, then, we tough it out.

Note, those election results pages you see in that bug at the top of the page will be cached. They'll be updated every four minutes. So if you're refreshing every three seconds, you are helping kill the site. Give it a break and refresh less often.

Godspeed.
