Kos and others have spoken quite eloquently about MLB Opening Day and the unofficial holiday it is to many. I love baseball, and for most of my life it was my favorite sport, but it was always in close competition with another sport, which many may consider to be culture to Hoosiers (which I was born)...
and that would be Basketball. Or hoops, or fullcourt, or whatever you may wish to call what is now my favorite game.
We are now entering the high season of basketball. Although a fan of the NBA, and particularly of the form that the Sacramento Kings play, it lacks a drama, a dimension, a sweetness in spirit that another basketball event displays prior to the NBA playoffs each calendar year.
I, of course, speak of the NCAA College Basketball Tournaments - both brackets. To me, there is nothing like it in the rest of sports, where Davids can literally defeat Goliaths, or at least the college basketball equivalent, on a given Thursday or Friday or Saturday or Sunday. The first weekend, where 64 becomes 16, is particularly enjoyable and dramatic, where teams like the Richmond Spiders become legend and teams like Indiana can fail, raising or crushing the spirits of a whole state. I have actually taken a Thursday off of work when I lived in California to watch games - it is that dear to me.
And so, this Sunday will be the determination of who is included in year's tournaments. A week from Thursday it begins. I know I look forward to it.
But that begs the question - of what sport are we all most intoxicated with, as spectators, if any? And so below is the obvious poll.
