WASHINGTON- The Bush administration does not intend to release all memos and others documents written by Supreme Court nominee John Roberts during his tenure with two Republican administrations, a White House representative said Sunday.
Ooooh ... sounds damning. Sounds like they have something to hide. Sounds positively ... sinister. And I'm sure it's supposed to.
But the fact is, as the story goes on to report in the third paragraph, no recent administration has turned over these sort of documents, including the Clinton administration. Will the average American get beyond the headline and first two paragraphs? Will the average voter already know that compliance with this request would be uncommon?
Gosh ... let me think for a fraction of a nanosecond ... no. No, they would not.
All I can say to the Senate Democrats who orchestrated this piece of political theater by making the demand is: Welcome to the big time, guys and gals. Do this a couple hundred more times on a couple hundred other issues and I'll be convinced you've watched the Republicans at work and are up to the job of getting the media where you want it, at least some of the time A couple thousand more times and you might - just might - win an election.
Now I'm off to write love letters to a few senators ....
