Bush has said over and over:
"You've heard the rhetoric, right, tax the rich?" Bush said Monday in Michigan. "We've heard that before. The rich hire accountants and lawyers for a reason. And you get stuck with the bill. Raising taxes is wrong right now for this economy, and we're not going to let him get away with it."
Um, what do those accountants do? Well, ask the shareholders of Enron. Ask Bush's friend Ken Lay. Ask the shareholders of Worldcom. Ask any number of the rich and super rich people who Bush openly calls "his base." The rich have money to hire lawyers and accountants to exploit the tax loopholes and shelters Bush has worked so fervently to protect and expand.
In fact, you don't need to raise taxes as much if you just close the loopholes, enforce the laws, make the same effort to jail white collar criminals who steal money from working people as we do to bust the average Joe for forgetting about a bonus cheque or a receipt.
This is so typical of conservatives. They say: 'this is the way it is folks. We can't change it, so we might as well just give up.'
